Inflection AI, founded by DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, trained its Pi conversational AI using a high-density GPU cluster at CoreWeave's midwest data center facilities, backed by over $1.3 billion in investor funding. Following Microsoft's acquisition of most of Inflection's team and IP in 2024 (Mustafa Suleyman became head of Microsoft AI), the Pi AI product continued operating on Microsoft Azure infrastructure. The acquisition was structured to avoid EU merger scrutiny by hiring staff rather than buying the company outright. Pi's inference infrastructure migrated to Microsoft Azure's large AI compute footprint. Inflection's original GPU cluster included some 22,000 NVIDIA H100 chips — one of the largest single-purpose LLM training clusters at the time.
