Amazon Web Services — EU-WEST-2 London Region
London, Greater London, United Kingdom
Amazon Web Services EU-WEST-2 — the London region — is AWS’s primary UK cloud and AI infrastructure hub, launched in December 2016. The region operates three availability zones across facilities in the London metropolitan area and is the largest public cloud region in the United Kingdom by capacity. It is the primary choice for UK enterprises and government agencies requiring UK data residency, operating under the UK GDPR and UK AI regulation frameworks.
The London region hosts a comprehensive suite of AWS AI services including Amazon Bedrock (with access to Claude, Llama, and Amazon Titan models), SageMaker, Rekognition, and Comprehend. It is central to the UK government’s G-Cloud programme and was certified for OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE UK government data processing by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Public sector customers include NHS Digital, DVLA, HMRC, and multiple UK local government authorities.
AWS has committed over £8 billion to UK infrastructure since 2011 and employs approximately 14,000 people across the country. The London region is powered by 100% renewable energy through PPAs with UK offshore wind projects. The region serves as a critical post-Brexit data processing hub for financial services firms needing to separate EU and UK workloads under new regulatory requirements, with Canary Wharf and the City of London financial district as primary enterprise customers.
