Mistral AI, France’s leading AI startup and a major player in the European open-source model ecosystem, trains its models primarily on GPU clusters hosted through OVHcloud (France’s largest cloud provider) and other EU-based infrastructure. The startup launched in 2023 with former Google DeepMind and Meta researchers and quickly established itself with efficient small models: the Mistral 7B instruct model outperformed larger competitors and sparked a wave of open-weight model fine-tuning globally.
