Google — Sydney AI Data Center (Australia-Southeast1)

Google Cloud’s Sydney region (australia-southeast1), launched in 2017, is Google’s primary Australian AI infrastructure facility and serves the Australian and New Zealand market under Australian Privacy Act requirements. The facility provides full Google Cloud AI services including Vertex AI, Document AI, Translation AI, and Gemini API with Australian data residency.

The Sydney region serves major Australian enterprises in mining (BHP, Rio Tinto), banking (Westpac, NAB), retail (Coles, Woolworths), and healthcare (Medibank, Bupa), which use Google Cloud AI for operational optimization, customer intelligence, and predictive analytics. The National Australia Bank and Qantas have deployed Google Cloud AI for fraud detection and airline operations optimization respectively.

Google has committed to 24/7 carbon-free energy globally by 2030 and purchases 100% renewable electricity for Australian operations through Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) from Australian wind and solar projects. A Melbourne secondary region (australia-southeast2) was added in 2021 for geographic redundancy. Google employs approximately 1,200 people in Australia, including a significant engineering presence focused on APAC AI research.
