Amazon Web Services AP-SOUTHEAST-2 — the Sydney region — is AWS's primary Australian cloud and AI infrastructure hub, launched in November 2012. Operating across three availability zones across facilities in the greater Sydney area, it serves the Australian and New Zealand market and is the primary region for Australian government agencies under the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM).

The Sydney region hosts AWS AI services including Amazon Bedrock (with Australian data residency), SageMaker, Rekognition, and Amazon Comprehend for Australian English. Key customers include Commonwealth Bank of Australia, ANZ Bank, Telstra, Woolworths Group, and multiple federal agencies including the Australian Tax Office, Department of Home Affairs, and Services Australia. AWS Sydney holds PROTECTED-level certification for Australian government data.

AWS has committed AU$13 billion in Australian infrastructure investment through 2033, the largest cloud infrastructure commitment ever announced in Australia. This investment supports Australia's growing AI sector, including CSIRO AI programs, university AI research partnerships (University of Sydney, Melbourne, UNSW), and emerging AI startups. All AWS Sydney facilities are matched to 100% renewable energy through Large-scale Generation Certificates (LGCs) from Australian solar and wind projects.
