Technology Innovation Institute — Falcon AI Compute (UAE)

The Technology Innovation Institute (TII), Abu Dhabi’s advanced scientific research center, developed the Falcon series of large language models — which became the most downloaded open-source AI models in the world in 2023. The Falcon 40B and Falcon 180B models were trained on TII’s GPU clusters and released under a permissive license that made them foundational for the open-source AI community globally. TII operates GPU compute at Masdar City, Abu Dhabi’s sustainable technology district, with power from renewable sources. The Falcon project represents a landmark in Arab AI capabilities — the models are among the few large-scale foundation models developed outside the US, China, or major European tech companies. TII has also developed Falcon Arabic, specialized for Arabic-language tasks supporting UAE and broader Arab region AI applications.
