In May 2024, Microsoft announced a $2.2 billion investment in Malaysia, its largest in the country’s history. The project includes the development of two distinct cloud regions: Malaysia West in Greater Kuala Lumpur and a second hub in Johor. The Greater Kuala Lumpur region launched in May 2025 with three Availability Zones. This infrastructure is “AI-ready,” designed to support generative AI workloads and large-scale cloud computing. Microsoft’s commitment also includes AI training for 800,000 Malaysians, aiming to boost the country’s position as a leading digital economy in Southeast Asia.
