Google Gemini Cluster (Iowa/Nebraska)
Council Bluffs, Midwest (Iowa–Nebraska cluster), United States
Google has established a massive 1-gigawatt (GW) AI training cluster spanning its campuses in Iowa and Nebraska to serve as the primary engine for its Gemini models. This “AI Hypercomputer” architecture integrates thousands of Google’s custom-designed TPU v5p accelerators, linked with high-speed optical circuit switching.
In 2024, Google accelerated this buildout with a $7 billion expansion in Iowa (focused on Council Bluffs and a new site in Cedar Rapids) and nearly $1 billion in Nebraska (spanning Papillion, Omaha, and Lincoln). To manage the extreme thermal demands of TPU v5p clusters, these facilities utilize “Project Deschutes,” Google’s fifth-generation direct-to-chip liquid cooling system. This technology allows for double the chip density per rack while reducing cooling energy consumption by 30%. The cluster leverages the region’s robust wind energy portfolio, with Google aiming for 24/7 carbon-free energy operations by 2030.
