ExxonMobil's 1.5GW Data Center Power Plant Initiative
Houston, Southern United States, United States
In December 2024, ExxonMobil announced plans to build a dedicated 1.5 GW natural gas power plant to supply electricity for future data centers. This marks the company’s first foray into power generation for external customers, driven by surging energy demand from AI and cloud providers. The project will integrate carbon capture technology designed to eliminate up to 90 percent of the plant’s emissions, positioning it as a lower-carbon power solution. Still in early development, Exxon has secured land for the facility and is in talks with hyperscale data center operators that would take the power, aiming to deliver fast-track, reliable energy capacity while avoiding the interconnection bottlenecks facing new grid-tied projects.
