Datagrid’s “AI Factory” in Makarewa, near Invercargill, is a landmark 280 MW hyperscale project designed specifically for high-density AI training and inference. Spanning 78,000 square meters, it will be the second-largest electricity user in New Zealand. The campus leverages the region’s cool climate and proximity to renewable energy sources. It is supported by the Tasman Ring subsea cable network, providing the South Island’s first direct international fiber connection, positioning Southland as a strategic node in the global AI infrastructure landscape.
