The Olkaria Geothermal Campus is a flagship $1 billion partnership between Microsoft and UAE-based G42 to build East Africa’s first geothermal-powered hyperscale data center. The facility will host a new Microsoft Azure East Africa Cloud Region, providing the first local hyperscale cloud for the region. While the initial phase provides 100 MW of capacity, the campus has a long-term goal of reaching 1 GW. The project specifically focuses on developing Swahili and English Large Language Models (LLMs) and supporting Kenya’s “Sovereign AI” initiative by keeping national data on local soil.
